Are You Playing to Win?
Or Playing Not to Lose?

The Power of the Third Alternative

Most of us are taught to think in terms of either/or. Win or lose. Go all in or walk away. But what if there’s a third option—one that transforms how you move through challenge?

During my Live Hard journey (the year-long follow-up to 75 Hard), I hit a wall. Not just physically—though I was sore and tired—but mentally and emotionally too. I was doing everything “right,” following the program to a T. But I realized I had a choice: keep going through sheer force, or stop and pick it up again later.

Then I remembered something I’d read about the “third alternative”—a space where synergy lives, where new possibilities emerge when we break free from binary thinking. What if I didn’t force my way forward or give up altogether? What if I stayed the course from a place of flow, openness, and curiosity?

That question changed everything.

I stopped asking “Can I keep going?” and started asking “What might be possible if I did?” That’s when things shifted. My body was still tired, but my mindset was energized. I began seeing the impact of this choice not just in workouts, but in my leadership, my emotional resilience, and my spiritual growth.

So I’ve decided to share more of this journey—not because I think I have all the answers, but because I know someone reading this might be facing their own fork in the road. Maybe it’s a business challenge, a tough relationship, or a health diagnosis. Whatever your version is, I invite you to ask: what’s your third alternative?

You don’t have to choose between burnout and giving up. There’s a more powerful path. And it starts with a single question.
